21CSOE: 21st Century Schools of Education

We are in an era of unprecedented national investment in transforming public education. Stimulus funds and national standards are two of America’s most visible investments of money and intellect in our children.

But, if we want sustainable changes in how we do preK-12 education, we must make changes, too, in our teacher preparation programs - where we prepare and develop America's teachers, school administrators and other education professionals.

It’s time that we establish 21st century schools, colleges and departments of education that prepare teachers, administrators and other education leaders in new ways, with new skills, for new challenges and opportunities, with new technologies and learning objectives for the 21st century. “21CSOE”: 21st Century Schools of Education is a national leadership initiative and call to action, helping education's leaders set targets for change – and cause change to happen – in schools, colleges and departments of education across the nation.

ICL has adopted 21CSOE as a program priority. During 2008-09, the Institute facilitated the development of a new partnership (the first!) between the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills to strengthen the participation of schools and colleges of education in this national conversation. In February 2009, ICL inaugurated the national conversation among deans of education with a half-day preconference session titled Developing a Vision for 21st-Century Schools of Education: An Out-Loud Session of Critical Thinking for the Profession (at AACTE) sponsored by Pearson Education.

[Pearson Education began work on the video "TEACHER EDUCATION AND 21st CENTURY SKILLS" (see adjacent column) as a corollary of this national conversatin with deans.]

ICL's leadership will continue as a collaborative force for visionary planning and change at national and local levels. The purpose of our involvement is two-fold:

  1. to develop consensus among teacher educators and stakeholders across the nation regarding the characteristics of a 21st Century School of Education and

  2. to develop practical regional and national action plans to help local schools and colleges work to become 21CSOE.

The work has begun. Visit our blog site at 21CSOE.org to join our 21CSOE Working Group, stay abreast of activities, share what you're doing in your school or college, share your reaction to the video and, more important, contribute your thoughts on this important initiative.
